Operation Baghdad Pups: Charlie Mission Accomplished

Washington, DC February 14

In a wartime Valentine’s Day to remember, Charlie, a black-and-white puppy and unit-mascot for Charlie Company serving in Iraq, took his first steps on American soil today thanks to SPCA International’s program, Operation Baghdad Pups program and the program sponsor, I Love Dogs, Inc.

A team of SPCA International staff and volunteers welcomed Charlie this morning at the International Arrivals Lobby at Dulles airport after he cleared customs with SPCA International’s Animal Rescue Consultant, Terri Crisp. Former Reservist Mark Feffer and his war-mascot, Cinnamon, rescued out of Afghanistan, were there to greet Charlie too. Feffer and Cinnamon are featured in the book “44 Days Out Kandahar” by Christine Sullivan, which tells the amazing tale of Cinnamon’s journey from Iraq to her home in America.

A team of committed patriots collaborated to bring Charlie home – from the official Baghdad Pups sponsor, I Love Dogs, Inc, to commercial airlines and Iraq-based American contractors. It all began with Charlie’s unit in Iraq who rescued him and nursed him back to health as a tiny puppy on the streets of Baghdad. His journey concluded today in Washington, D.C.

“Me, and all the guys in our company, almost don't believe it and we can't wait for him to get his first taste of the good old USA,” explains one Charlie Company Soldier. “We especially can't wait until we can see him again.”

It is thanks to Charlie and Charlie Company that SPCA International founded Operation Baghdad Pups and is currently working to bring 13 more companion animals out of the war zone. SPCA International hopes to see that number continue to rise as more people hear about the program and the opportunity to save the lives of the animals that have comforted our troops through the terrors of war.

On Friday, February 15, Charlie has a veterinarian appointment scheduled in Arlington, Virginia for a full check up. Later today, Charlie will take a walk on the National Mall to stretch his legs after his 14-hour trip in the cargo-hold. SPCA International is ensuring this unit-mascot gets to take in the sites before heading to his final destination, and new home, in Phoenix, AZ where he will eagerly wait while the soldiers of Charlie Company finish their tour of duty.

“We are thrilled to have Charlie safe on American soil,” says Stephanie Scroggs, SPCA International Director of Communications. “Charlie is our inspiration at SPCA International and we are so pleased to have the opportunity to give something back to the soldiers who are fighting for our freedom and security in the War on Terror.”
